Away and Free
A girl, no, a lady.
She passes me by,
With a gay laugh
And a twinkle in her eye.
The crowd about
Stops and stares.
For a lady, no, a girl
Should not behave so.
And all about come the frowns
And the muttering,
And the glares.
Which she returns, defiantly.
I know well her plight,
And I agree
Oh, what I should give
To be away and free!
But the girl, nay, the lady
She can!
Although it seemed but a cloak before
Now she has wings!
She spreads those wings
And leaps into the sky,
Soaring high
Away and free.
Oh lady free
I beg of thee!
Come back, come back!
Oh please, take me!
For I wish to fly,
As well as you
And soar so high
Away and free.
With wings of gold
She turns and wheels.
The merest dot
In a sky of boundless blue.
With a final turn
And a shout of glee
She soars away,
Away and free.
Oh lady free
I beg of thee!
Come back, come back,
Come back for me!
