I'm aware that the Germans at least implemented the "Schurzen"

Just a minor point, the schutzen shields where designed in 1943 to
defeat Russian 14.5mm HVAP shot.
As to armor construction techniques , the Germans fielded spaced armor
plates on the front mantle and driver plates of the Pz-III. It was
later discovered in british tests that these detonated APHE after
penetrating the first outer plate. That is why the 6lb AP ammo had the
HE filler replaced with inert material.
Russian sources "Valera Potapov" RBF site has reported that this type
of armor even defeated all thier APHE shells even 122mm APHE shells,
which exploded in between the inner and outer plates!
I don't know why the germans never continued the practice , since most
shells in WW-II were APHE types. I suspect it had to do with the cost
of construction.
