Rain Testing Our Limits

2014-02-09

Our area finally got some rain!  About six inches worth, though of course we got a lot more than that since the properties around us form a "V", with us at the apex.  All that water filled our pond and creek.

We (cobalt and I) wandered around, looking at things and occasionally poking them with sticks.  My cat Azathoth wandered around behind us, oblivious to the rain.

The extra drainage we put in around the house a few years ago is still holding strong.  The underside of the house remained quite dry.  I worry a bit about the stream overflowing and flooding the wellhouse, though.

Intrepid explorer, my wife, and all-around bad-ass, posing for the camera. Hi, cobalt!

WTF is that?

Oh, hi Azathoth! Nice throne of briar you found there.

This is where the property to the south of our driveway drains into the seasonal creek. It's flowing briskly.

The upstream portion is looking good! Not clogged, and a good two feet or so below its banks.

Where the stream straightens out beyond the first bridge, it climbs up to the top of its bank. That worries me. It means it will flood here, if the next rain is harder than this one.

The stream is all the way up to the lower edge of the second bridge. Again, worrying. If it gets much higher, it might sweep the bridge away.

I meant to suggest to cobalt "Perhaps we should use a shovel instead of a stick?" but judging from her reaction it came out "Perhaps we should shoot a puppy?" I guess she's happy with her stick.

Beyond the second bridge, the stream remains worryingly full on its way to the bramble behind the wellhouse.

The stream exits our property to the northeast. It's flowing pretty well on the other side of the property line, so if we just dredge it a little on our side it should be fine.

There's a low spot on the east end of the berm around the pond, where it's overflowing into our yard. The yard has a slight eastward slope to it, all the way to the seasonal creek about thirty feet west of the house.

This is the whole pond, taken from the northwestern edge. It is soooo full! I wish we had a water tower so we could retain some of that water through the dry season. The round structure in the background is our neighbors' buffalo-pen.
